During Saturday’s big fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, Dan Hill was seated at a raucous table with boxers, sports writers, and fans, writing a live blog of the event for the Wall Street Journal.  Sharing his stories about Manny Pacquiao and how their unique friendship came to be while interspersing comments about the fight, Dan writes a compelling journal of watching his friend in yet another victory over a tough opponent:

After seeing Manny sing “Sometimes When We Touch” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2009, I was so moved by his performance that I reached out to him through my record producer. Although I gave the odds of Manny responding to my request to meet him on par with, well, arranging a sitdown with Elvis, the unimaginable happened.

In June of 2010, Manny and I spent the afternoon hanging out in his suite at the St. Regis in New York City. We agreed to record “Sometimes…” along with an accompanying video and documentary. What struck me at the time about Manny was his humility and his infectious enthusiasm for music. “I sing to my children every night, before they go to sleep,” he told me. “I never talk to them about boxing and don’t have any photos or awards connected to my boxing anywhere in my house.”

Shortly before his October fight with Antonio Margarito, we cut our vocals at the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood. He showed up in his workout clothes following a 12-hour training session, and I was flabbergasted by Manny’s energy, focus and the sweetness of his vocal tone. Clearly, he brought his champion’s gift of concentration into the studio with him. He studied and flawlessly sang back whatever series of complex notes I threw at him. The only other singer I’d coached in the studio that matched Manny’s work ethic and hyper-focus was Celine Dion.

Manny Pacquiao Cracks the Top-10 with Dan Hill’s “Sometimes When We Touch”

LOS ANGELES (August 10, 2011) – He came, he sang, he recorded. Congressman MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO, boxing’s No. 1 pound for pound fighter inside the ring is becoming a hit machine outside the ring. His remake of the Dan Hill-penned hit, Sometimes When We Touch, which was released on April 28, cracked the Top-10 this week, landing at No. 7 on the Secondary Adult Contemporary Chart as measured by the Friday Morning Quarterback Album Report (FMQB.)  As it has throughout its run, Sometimes When We Touch remains a Top-Five most-added song on radio station playlists this week.

“Manny leaping from No. 11 to No. 7 on the Adult Contemporary secondary charts reminds us once more that there’s nothing this man/boxer/congressman/singer is not capable of,” said Dan Hill. “I’m so proud to call him my friend and a major life inspiration.”

Last October, weeks before his astonishing 12-round unanimous decision victory over Antonio Margarito where he won the vacant WBC super welterweight championship, his record eighth world title in as many weight divisions, Pacquiao interspersed his training at World-Famous Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club with sessions in a Hollywood studio to record the unforgettable iconic ballad Sometimes When We Touch with the same production team that brought the song to the top of the charts in 1977. With songwriter and original singer Hill in his corner, and producers Matthew McCauley and Fred Mollin, Pacquiao delivered a passionate performance that showed the warmth and courage in the boxer’s heart.
